Have you ever heard the word “Karyukai”?

Karyukai is the pleasure quarters entertaining guests cordially with the highest quality in Japan.

The pleasure quarters called Karyukai are constituted of 3 types of business as follows:

1)     Geisha house employing Geisha.

2)     Ryotei which provides the place of entertainment.

3)     Ryoriya which provides the Japanese-style dish of the highest grade cooked by their own cooks.

I am sure that you heard the words, "Geisha", and "Maiko" once.

I am sad indeed, they have been misunderstood by not only too many foreigners but also some Japanese very much.

“Gei” of Geisha in Japanese means “Art”, and “sha” of Geisha means people, so Geisha means Artists.

They are professional entertainers trained in traditional dancing and music.

Furthermore they are the cultured professionals who entertain guests cordially with the highest quality and treat guests with consideration.

The places of work are Ryotei and Ryoriya.

The female Geisha are called Maiko or Geiko.

Maiko are working as apprentice under a proprietress of a Geisha house and living in the proprietress’s house.

Maiko have got pocket money instead of the salary.

The Geisha house manages Maiko until Maiko become independent.

When Maiko become independent, Maiko change the name to Geiko.

The No.1 Karyukai is located in Kyoto, because Kyoto can provide all the following at once such as Japanese old cityscape, Japanese traditional buildings, Japanese-style dish of the highest grade, Japanese traditional costume, Japanese traditional dancing and music and so on.

花柳界（かりゅうかい）という言葉を聞いたことがあるでしょうか。

日本の最高級（さいこうきゅう）の接待（せったい）の場（ば）です。

花柳界（かりゅうかい）は次の３つの業種（ぎょうしゅ）から成（な）り立っています。

１．芸妓衆（げいこしゅう）を抱（かか）えている置屋（おきや）。

２．遊びの場（ば）を提供（ていきょう）する料亭（りょうてい）。

３．自前（じまえ）の料理を供（きょう）する料理屋（りょうりや）。

芸者（げいしゃ）さんとか舞妓（まいこ）さんという言葉は聞いたことがあると思います。

実（じつ）に悲しいことに、多くの外国人そして一部の日本人にも大きな誤解（ごかい）をされています。

芸者の「芸（げい）」はアートで、「者（しゃ）」は人を意味します。ですから芸者はアーティストなんです。

歌や舞踊（ぶよう）はもちろんのこと、おもてなしの心を持って最高級（さいこうきゅう）の接待をしてくれるプロなのです。料亭や料理屋が職場（しょくば）となります。

　女性の芸者（げいしゃ）を芸妓（げいこ）さんとか舞妓（まいこ）さんと言います。

置屋（おきや）に住み込みで年季奉公（ねんきほうこう）していて給料の代わりに、お小遣（こづか）いをもらっている人たちが舞妓（まいこ）さんです。

一本立（いっぽんだ）ち（自立（じりつ））するまでは、置屋（おきや）さんが彼女たちを管理（かんり）しています。自立（じりつ）したら芸妓（げいこ）さんと呼ばれることになるのです。

　花柳界（かりゅうかい）の最高峰（さいこうほう）は京都です。

日本古来（にほんこらい）の町並（まちな）み、日本の伝統的（でんとうてき）な建物（たてもの）、日本の料理、日本の衣装（いしょう）、日本の歌や舞踊（ぶよう）、これらのすべてが揃（そろ）っているのです。

　東京でも芸妓（げいこ）遊びができますが、折角（せっかく）日本にいるのですから、京都に行ってみましょう！
